How to Trailer a Boat

Trailering a boat isn't as scary as it may seem if you've never done it before. The only thing you should have to worry about is how much fun you'll be having at the lake, so here are our tips to ensure your confidence of towing a boat.

Towing Capacity

This may seem obvious, but as it might be the most important detail for towing a boat, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention it...

Make sure your vehicle has the towing capacity to hitch a boat. You can find your vehicles maximum towing capacity in the owner’s manual. As well, you will need a trailer hitch that is rated for the weight of your load (don’t forget to include the trailer weight ontop of the boat weight!). Make sure your weight is distributed evenly. If not, get a weight distribution hitch (Blue Ox makes some great ones).

Your tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of your overall load weight. If you experience any sway while driving, pull over immediately and check your weight distribution. That is the most likely cause for the swaying and can be dangerous.

Secure the Boat

The weight of your boat will not keep it secure during transportation. Everything you tow should be properly secured for the safety of you and other drivers.

Use ratchet straps to tie down your boat to the trailer. Doing this can help prolong the life of your trailer with a smooth secure ride for your vehicle and trailer. You can get great quality ratchet straps here

Basic Towing Checklist & Tips

There are a few things you should double check before every trip for basic safety.

  1. Make sure your trailer tail lights are working.
  2. You DON'T have low tire pressure. No one wants to pop a tire before a fun vacation day.
  3. NO loose gear in your boat. Have everything in your vehicle or secured within the boat.
  4. Leave extra distance for braking.
  5. Take wide turns AND change lanes slowly. It is harder to see the cars behind your trailer and they may move suddenly and much faster than you can react while pulling a load.
  6. Watch your speed when accelerating. You are carrying a lot of weight, and while your equipment is meant for heavy loads things could break or your boat could slide around if you accelerate too fast.

And, of course don't forget the sunscreen and snacks so you can stay out on the water all day!
