What Ball Mount Do I Need?

For safe and comfortable towing, the tongue of your trailer should always be even with the vehicle. Sometimes a trailer's tongue is higher or lower than the ball mount on the vehicle. In this situation, a ball mount with a "Rise" or a "Drop" is required to level the trailer. Confused on if you need a rise or drop? Read below to find out which ball mount is best for you!

How to Measure

Step 1: Measure from the ground to the top of your trailer’s hitch.

Step 2: After your trailer is level, measure from the ground to the bottom of your trailer’s coupler.

Step 3: Subtract step 2 from step 1. (Subtract the height of your trailer’s coupler from the height of your trailer’s hitch)

  • If your hitch height is greater than your coupler height, you need a ball mount with a drop.

  • If your coupler height is greater than your hitch height, you need a ball mount with a rise.

Customize your Search

After finding out if you need a ball mount with a drop or a rise, you still have a lot of options to choose from. Start by figuring out your gross towing weight (GTW). This will be the total amount of weight you are towing; don't forget to include any cargo you will be bringing. You can get this number by putting your fully loaded trailer on a scale.

Other important categories to customize your search include your ball size and your hitch class. Shop now on our website!

Towing Multiple Things?

If you have more than one thing to tow, you will need an Adjustable Ball Mount. Adjustable Ball Mounts allow you to adjust the rise and drop of your trailer’s ball mount.

For example, if you have both a boat and a small camper that need towing, they won’t sit the same on the tongue of your trailer. One could need a rise while the other needs a drop!
